carbohydrates are made from carbon, hydrogen and oxygen, they store energy. Plant cell wall depend on the structual role of some carbohydrates.
Types of carbohydrates:
- monosaccharides- 1 molecule
- disaccharides- 2 molecule
- polysaccharides- many molecules
THEY ARE ORGANIC BECAUSE THEY CONTAIN CARBON!!
monosaccharides- small organice molecules, building blocks for more complex carbohydrates.
disaccharides- form when 2 monosaccharides units join forming a glycosidic bond by a condensation reaction.
GLUCOSE+GLUCOSE=MALTOSE
GLUCOSE+GALACTOSE=LACTOSE
GLUCOSE+FRUCTOSE=SUCROSE
GLUCOSE- C6H12O6
ALPHA GLUCOSE- CH2OH
BETA GLUCOSE- CH2OH
when 2 molecules of glucose react a maltose molecule is made and H2O is released. This is called a condensation reaction.
POLYSACCHARIDES:
polysaccharides form from many monomers joined by glycosidic bonds.
STARCH is a polysaccharide. its a polymer of glucose, its found in plants, its an insoluble type of carbohydrate.
plants store glucose as starch so it doesnt affect the osmotic balance of the…
