Electrolysis of Salt Water (Brine).

Electrolysis of Salt gives Hydrogen, Chlorine and NaOH.

Concentrated brine (sodium cholride solution) is electrolysed industrially using a set a bit like this:

There are three useful products:

1) Hydrogen gas is given off at the cathode.

2) Chlorine gas is given of at the anode.

3) Sodium hydroxide is left in solution.

These are collected, and then used in all sorts of industries to make various products as detailed below.
