Blood contains four main components: red blood cells, white blood cells, plasma and platelets.

Red blood cells

  • transport oxygen around the body from the lungs to organs
  • contain no nucleus - more room for haemoglobin
  • biconcave shape (cave in on both sides) for a large surface area
