Blanche Debois: Opening Description

Blanche is the protagansit of the play and the tradegy figure. Blanche is effected deeply by her past and the ideals that society of her time places on her, however she still contradicts the sterotypes in many ways. 

[She continues to laugh. Blanche comes around the corner, currying a valise. She looks at a slip of paper, then at the building, then again at the slip and again at the building. Her expression is one of shocked disbelief. Her appearance is incongruous to this setting. She is daintily dressed in a white suit with a fluffy bodice, necklace and earrings of pearl, white gloves and hat, looking as if she were arriving at a summer tea or cocktail party in the garden district. She is about five years older than Stella. Her delicate beauty must avoid a strong light. There is something about her uncertain manner, as well as her white clothes, that suggests a moth.]

In this description it is possible to see that she has a nervous disposition this is shown by the fact that Tennessee uses the words “she looks at a slip of paper, then at the building, then again at the slip and again at the building” this suggests she is unsure of her location and feels the need to repeatedly check on things. It could also imply that she perhaps sees the building as shabby. Like her sister she is part of 'Belle Reve' which no longer existes in a large capacity within the world she now lives, yet she clings onto the higherarchial values of her forefathers, she disragads Eunice when she kindly offers to find her sister for her and replies with monosalabic awnser of "Yes" it is possible she sees Eunice as of a lower class, this attitude is again shown by Blanches use of the Word "Polack". All though the polish people were by this point often 2nd and 3rd generatation citizens, they were still regarded as being of a lower class. 

The fact that she is also dressed in a suit with fluffy bodice could imply that she is trying to hid the idea of fluff is often linked to the
