Inheritance of Sex: 

Gender (in mammals) is determined by the sex chromosomes: XX- female; XY - male. Egg cells all carry X chromosomes. Half of sperm cels carry X chromosomes and half carry Y chromsomes. 

The sex of an individual depends on whether the egg is fertilised by an X- or Y- carrying sperm.
