• 1922 Lenin instructed Dzerzhinsky to set up an agency within GPU to monitor press
• GPU kept former Tsarist officers under surveillance 
• 1922 Lenin asked Dzerzhinsky to supervise deportation of professors and engineers he thought were a threat.
• The GPU kept intellectualls and students uner close scrutiny- feared they would not support new gov. due to their privilege.
