Atmospheric circulation - Tri Cellular Model

  • Hadley Cell - Equator to 30 degrees N/S
  • Ferrel Cell - 30 degrees to 60 degrees N/S
  • Polar Cell - 60 degrees N/S towards the N/S pole

Corolis Force

  • The Corolis Force is the deflection of winds due to the rotation of the Earth

- Winds are caused by difference in air pressure, high air pressure to low air pressure

- Variations occur in wind depending on the temperature and altitude

- In the northern hemisphere, wind blows anticlockwise into a LPZ and clockwise outwards away from high air pressure due to the Corolis force

Maps

  • On maps air pressure is shown by isobars
  • When air pressure changes rapidly the isobars will be shown closer together known
