An Inspector Calls

1“The lighting should be pink and intimate until the inspector arrives, and then is should be harder and brighter” This tells us that the inspector is a significant character and he makes a difference. The hard lighting may be a metaphor for the inspector's personality- he looks into the Birlings' private lives and secrets. Arthur - “portentous .. fairly easy manners but provincial in his speech” 'his wife is about 50, a rather cold woman and her husband's social superior' He tries to look important but his manners are that of a lower classed person. Most likely intentionally marries a social superior as classes matter to him. Social climber. Sheila pretty girl in her 20's, pleased with life. Gerald is attractive, about 30 manly but a well bred young man about tiwn. Eric's in his early 20's,half shy half assertive.

2 Birling is trying to impress Gerald while slightly ignoring Eric. He mentions Gerald's father first thing, as his social statust is important to and excites him. The tone is slightly artificial- Birling only cares about Georges social class.

3. Not only raised social status and respect but perhaps further prosperity. He's delighted about this and doesn't really even care about Gerald's personality. Cofts and Birlings the companies will come together; for lower costs and higher profits.

4.He wants the wedding to happen as fast as possible but he's only focusing on the forseen 'time of steadily increasing prosperity'. He is optimistic for the future and confident that there will not be a war. As the audience knows there will be a war, we begin to doubt Mr Birling's judgement. (If he is wrong about the war, what else will he be wrong about?). He thinks he knows it all and he is full o himself.

5. He stops bragging and doing open speeches,
