Alpha Radiation

An alpha particle is made up of 2 protons and 2 neutrons, it has a positive charge as it has no electrons. Alpha particles are given out when unstable atoms split.

They can be stopped by a sheet of paper

Alpha radiation is not dangerous outside the body as it cannot penetrate the skin. However if it forms inside the body it's extremely dangerous as it can't get out.

Alpha radiation is deflected by both electric and magnetic fields.

It is used in smoke detectors and in making sure paper and card are the correct thickness.
