From the sixth century, the rise of Islam in Arabia created a powerful new civilisation that expanded into three continents while Christianity gradually spread throughout Europe.

Islam's spread

• It was founded by the Prophet Muhammad in 570.
• The muslim Arabs conquered vast areas of Asia,Africa and south-westeren Europe.

•  The Muslims conquered Syria, Jordan, Palestine and Iraq. They took Egypt from the Byzantine Empire and overthrew the Sassanian Empire in Persia. Muslims came to rule most of Spain and Central Asia up to the borders of China.
