Yalta Conference... Feb 1945

Stalin, Roosevelt, and Churchill

  • Germany to be split into 4 zones
  • Germany will pay reparations
  • Liberated countries had elections to choose new governments and decided Stalin should be in charge of Eastern Europe
  • Russia would aid in the fight against Japan

Disagreements over Poland:

  • Stalin wanted to move his border into Germany - US and Britain not happy but Stalin had 1000 troops in Poland so they had to agree...
  • However, Stalin agreed he wouldn't back any communists in Greece

GERMANY SURRENDERS, 8th May 1945

  •  Roosevelt and Churchill reduced their troops in Europe but Stalin did not... He felt he still needed protection

Potsdam Conference... July/August 1945

Attlee, Truman, Stalin

  • Truman was a lot more suspicious of Stalin than Roosevelt was

Disagreements over Germany

  • Stalin wanted to get rid of Germany
  • Truman didn't want to have another incident like the Treaty of Versailles...
  • Stalin wanted Germany to pay reparations, Attlee didn't and Truman was cautious of repeat past mistakes
  • Stalin didn't know why Attlee and Truman wanted to help Germany
  • Stalin set up pro-communist Eastern Europe

Truman was developing the atomic bomb and tested it in July 1945

  • Stalin didn't trust Attlee or Truman and they didn't trust him...
  • Attlee and Truman didn't allow Stalin a Naval base (Stalin felt mistrusted)
  • Stalin set up Communist Government in Lubin (Other two were suspicious)
