The Treaty of Versailles

Land Losses: All German colonies were lost and lost European territory, no union between Germany and Austria were allowed and the German Rhineland was to be occcupied by Allies for 15 years - a buffer zone.

Responsibilities: Germany had to admit it caused the war and was responsible for all the damage done (Article 231), Kaiser Wilhelm and other leaders had to be tried for war crimes.

Economic Terms: Germany to pay reparations (£6600 million was decided in 1921), payment to be in products as well as money (e.g. coal and steel), France to control the Saar coalfields for 15 years, and los of territory meant economic losses.

Military Restrictions: German army only 100,000 troops, conscription banned, German navy only 15,000 men, 6 battleships and no submarines, no armed planes, tanks or machine guns

League of Nations: Set up as a way to avoid future wars, countries could be called up for discussion

Austria: Treaty of St Germain (Sept 1919)

  • Broke up the Austro-Hungarian Empire
  • Austria lost land to Italy
  • Austria could only have 30,000 troops
  • Reparations, but the Austrian banks copllapses so nothing was ever paid

Hungary: Treaty of Trianon (June 1920)

  • Hungary made independant, but lost 2/3 of land
  • Hungarian army limited to 35,000 troops
  • Reparations - Hungarian banks collapsed and nothing was ever paid

Bulgaria: Treaty of Neuilly (Nov 1919)

  • Bulgaria lost land to Greece and Yugoslavia
  • Bulgaria's army was limited to 20,000 troops
  • Reparations were set at £100 million

Turkey: Treaty of Sevres (Aug 1920)

  • Ottoman Empire broken up
  • Lost European lands
  • Turkey got some land and control back again in Treaty of Lausanne
  • No reparations
