  • DIVORCE= break from Rome direct result Henry's wish for divorce
  • POWER= gain more power e.g head of church
  • MONEY= take wealth of church for himself
  • CRITICISMS= anti clericalism, anti papalism 
  • DOCTRINE= reformers in england to follow the german example

BREAK FROM ROME

  •  dismissal of woolsey for preminure was first sign that the king was more powerful than the king 
  • henry faced strong opposition at home during his break from Rome from conservtive bishops e.g archbishop of canterbury 
  • charles and france may attack to preserve catholisim and protect catherine of aragon

ENGLISH REFORMATION

  • radical ideas emerging 
  • 1531 Thomas Cromwell emerged to get Henry what he wanted 
  • Cromwell's ideas came from cramner
  • believed Henry coukd remove all papal power in England and grant himself a divorce
  • 1531 Henry asking parliamenr ro pass laws restricting the Pope's power in England and set punishment for those that oppose this

PHASE 1: THREAT

  • dismissed cardinal woolsey replaced him with laymen
  • made thomas cromwell lord chancellor 
  • made thomas carmner archbishop of canterbury 
  • set up reformation parliament gave him official control to remove papl influence 

ACTS PASSED 1529/31

  • end benefit of clergy- limit clergy involvment 
  • entire english church charged with premunire which was removed through paying a fine

PHASE 2: TURNING POINT

Anne became pregnant 1532 became urgent to marry so child would be legitimate 

  • submission of clergy- communication with rome prevented 
  • first act of annates- king has the right to appoint bishops, praminuire for those who didnt obey
  • supplication against the ordinances

PHASE 3: THE BREAK

church doctrine not different but structure power and proceedures are now in hands of henry

  • broke the catholic church in england from roman catholic church in rome
  • 1534- act of succession: henry never properly married to catherine, marriage to Anne is legitimate their children are the true heirs to throne 
  • 1534- act of supremacy: henry supreme head of church henry had complete control of the kingdom
  • 1534- the reason act: critiscm of king and his policies involving marriage and succession were not allowed
