THE PERIODIC TABLE 1

  • In an atom, the number of electrons equals the number of protons
  • there is 0 overall charge
  • All atoms of the same element have the same number of protons
  • Atomic number= no. protons+ no.electrons
  • mass number= no.protons+ n0. neutrons
  • Atoms consist of a central nucleus containing protons and neutrons. It is surrounded by electrons in energy levels (shells)
  • Electrons are not evenly spread, they exist in layers known as shells
  • this arrangement is called the electron configuration 2,2,8              PEN: subatomic particles
