Religion- Social Change

Religion Not Being A Conservative Force

Marxists - religion is a conservative force- supports the powerful and helps to keep masses in their place
BUT Roman Catholocism in Eastern Europe in the 70's and 80's supported resistance to the domination of the Soviet Union (Hunt 2002)

Feminism - Conservative force rather than a radical force
Concentrate on religion being dominated by males
They acknowledge that Goddesses played a significant part in some religions

Functionalism - Mailinowski, Parsons - Religion being a force for stability rather than change
They can be criticised for presenting what they see as a one-sided view
