Background- building on milgrams research

Aim- to investigate the rates of obedience, disobedience, and whistleblowing in an unethical situation.

sample- volunteer sample, payment of 7 euros, 149 students from VU university in Amsterdam. originally 160 but 11 removed. 

research menthod-  he thought it was a lab experiment, was a scenario study. independent measures design, written self report, no IV. DVs were obedience, whistleblowing or disobedience

procedure- the cover story was the effects of sensory deprivation on brain function. ppts asked to write a statement to convince the students to take part. including words like 'exciting', 'incredible'. they were left in the room for 7 minutes. if the ppts believed it wss unethical they had the opportunity to posting a form in the mailbox

results- 76.5% (114) were obedient, 14.1% (21) were disobedient and 9.4% (14) whistleblew

conclusions- behaving in a moral manner is challenging for people even when this reaction seems the simplest to follow. what people believe they will do is different to what they actually do. faith explains whistelblowing
