Electromagnetic Waves

  • Seven groups: 
    • Radio waves, Microwaves, Infrared, Visible Light, Ultraviolet, X-Rays, Gamma
      • All EM waves are transverse and travel at the same speed in a vacuum e.g. space
      • Longer wavelengths = Lower frequency, Shorter wavelengths = Higher frequency
  • Infrared Radiation: Herschel 1800  
    • Placed a prism infront of white light, creating a spectrum of 7 colours
    • Used 3 thermometers to record each temperature - increased from violent tor red
    • Measure temperature just past red where no visible light - highest temperatre; invisible infrared
  • Ultraviolet Radiation: Ritter soon after 1801
    • Ritter carried out experiments to see if there was light beyond the spectrum of violet
    • Measured how quickly silver chloride coated strips changed when exposed to different colours
    • Dark room, created a spectrum using a light source and prism, exposing the strips to each colour
    • After timing, strips changed quickest (white->black) when exposed to light nearer blue end
    • Placed a strip in area past the violet part of the spectrum, changed quickest; invisible ultraviolet
