Osmosis

Osmosis is the movement of water molecules across a partially permeable membrane from a region of high water concentration to a region of low water concentraton

  • partially permeable means its just one with very small holes in so only tiny molecules like water can pass through, however bigger ones like sucrose cant
  • water molecules pass both ways during osmosis, as they move about randomly
  • as more water molecules are on one side then the other, theres a steady net flow of water into the region with fewer water molecules e.g. stronger sugar solution
  • osmosis occurs in all plant and animal cells
  • roots absorb water from soil by osmosis
  • human bodies absorb water from our food by osmosis
