The Greeks relied heavily on observation. 'The father of modern medicine' was Hippocrates who came up with the theory of the 4 humours:
- Black Bile
- Yellow Bile
- Phlegm
- Blood
The Greek physicians believed that when we were ill these body fluids would be formed excessively and so would need to be removed from the body. They believed the 4 humours to be the cause of illness however they were only the symptoms of illness.
The Greeks were extremely faithful to their Gods for fear of punishment. Many of the greeks went to the Aclepion temple, home to Asclepius the God of healing.
