Negative Numbers

Negative Numbers:

ADDING a negative number gives a SMALLER number

eg.  5 + -3 = 2

SUBTRACTING a negative number gives a BIGGER number

eg.  5 - - 3 = 8

MULTIPLYING OR DIVIDING a positive number by a negative number gives a negative number

eg. +4 x -3 = -12           +4  ÷ -2 = -2

MULTIPLYING OR DIVIDING a negative number by a negative number gives a postive number

eg.  -4 x -3 = +12        -4  ÷  -2 = +2

Signs different = negative       signs the same = positive

+  X  - = -                     +  x  + = +

-  X  + =  -                     -  x  -  = +

÷  + =  -                     +  ÷  + = +

÷   -  =  -                    -  ÷  -  =+
