Percentage Atom Economy

Bromo-methane is reacted with sodium hydroxide to make methanol.

CH2Br + NaOH ----> CH3OH + NaBr

Calculate the atom economy.

1 of 4

% atom economy = mass of desired product             x 100

                               total mass of reactants

(12+(3x1)+16+1)            x 100

(12+(3x1)+80)+(23+16+1)

32g                    x100

135g

= 23.7%

Ar from Mass Spectrum

From a mass spectrum graph we see that 79% of magnesium atoms have a mass charge of 24, 10% have a mass charge of 25 and 11% have a mass charge of 26.

What is the Ar of magnesium, using this mass spec?

3 of 4

79 x 24 = 1896

10 x 25 = 250

11 x 26 = 286

1896 + 250 + 286 = 2432

2432

100

= 24.32 = 24.3
