Roles of men and women in the family

Genesis:  Tells the story of The Fall and explains how Eve was tricked into eating the apple

Marriage and divorce

John: Jesus’ first miracle was performed at a wedding. He turned water into wine

Mark: Jesus states that divorce is wrong

Rings -> circle represents eternity and unending love

Leviticus: “You must not have sexual intercourse with a male as one has sexual intercourse with a woman; it is a detestable act”

1 Corinthians: Lists those who “will not inherit the Kingdom of God” -> includes passive homosexual partners and practicing homosexuals

In Malachi, God says “I hate divorce”

Sexual relationships and contraception

1 Corinthians: St Paul suggests celibacy but says that sex is better within marriage than if done casually

Matthew: Jesus says adultery is wrong; thinking lustfully about someone is just as bad

Purpose of sex is to create new life -> Catholic Church doesn’t allow contraception

Some -> life is sacred but world overpopulated, contraception should be allowed

Attitudes to abortion

Exodus, 10 Commandments: “Thou shalt not kill”

said to Jeremiah: “Before you were born I chose you and set you apart”

Luke: “Are not sparrows five for tuppence?  Yet not one of them is overlooked by God…You are worth more than sparrows”

Genesis: “God created man in his own image”

Catholic -> life begins from conception, abortion is always wrong

Methodist -> can be lesser of 2 evils, if child would be born with incurable disease

Non-religious -> foetus not person until later development (22 weeks), up to woman (her own body)

Psalms: “All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to me”

Catholic -> life begins at conception, IVF produces spare embryos, AID form of adultery, parenthood divine gift, cloning destroys fertilised eggs, against Sanctity of Life

Attitudes to euthanasia and suicide

Exodus, 10 Commandments: “Thou shalt not kill”

Sanctity of Life: All life is sacred

1 Corinthians: “Surely you know that you are God’s temple, where the Spirit of God dwells”

1 Corinthians: “The body is a temple of the Holy Spirit”

1961 Suicide Act: Legal to kill yourself, illegal to assist in a suicide

Non-Christian -> ends someone’s suffering, dignity, terminal illness

Using animals in medical research

Proverbs: “A righteous man is merciful to the life of his beasts” (stewardship)

Psalms: “Thou make him master over all thy creatures; thou have put everything under his feet” (dominion)

Catholic -> animal testing ok if not hurt unnecessarily

Quakers -> opposed for trivial reasons (makeup)
