Value of glaciated landscapes

  • these landscapes have significant environmental and cultural value
    • provide scientific research
    • tourist locations
    • wilderness
    • biodiversity
    • recreation
    • spiritual and religious associations
  • despite value attitudes vary
    • acknowledge cultural value and environmental value
    • supporting preservation
    • others exploit these areas for economic gain
  • economically
    • glaciated landscapes provide farming and mining oppurtunities
    • energy oppurtunities: hydroelectric power
    • tourism
    • forestry
    • provides job oppurtunities
  • biodiversity
    • tundra (no trees)
    • permanently frozen soils
    • sustain natural systems through the water and carbon cycles
    • species are endemic to the region and are specially adapted to the conditions

Threats to glaciated landscapes

  • incredibly sensitive
  • natural and human induced
  • natural
    • glacial floods
    • avalanches
  • human
    • tourism
    • climate change - interfering with the mass balance
      • speeds up melting and increases flood risk
      • releases fresh water which can become polluted
      • can disrupt the hydrological cycle by producing greater river discharge, meltwater and poor water quality
    • urbanisation - stresses the environment and means more people are exposed to natural hazards
    • degrades the fragile ecology
    • destroy the wellbeing of local species
    • soil erosion, trampling, landslides
    • deforestation - reduces resilience because interception is reduced = flood or avalanche more likely to reach the urbanised area
  • players
    • tourist companies

Managing threats

  • a variety of stakeholder are involved to create policies favouring everyone's needs
  • techniques invlove agreements (ANTARCTIC TREATY)
  • legislative frameworks are used to protect these landscapes by conservation and management
  • can create conflict
  • total conservation = loss of jobs for tourism etc
  • climate change - context risk which is extremely difficult to control
  • future is uncertain - radical is unpopular
