Ionic Bonding

When atoms gain or lose electrons they are trying to gain a full outer shell

Metals lose electrons so become positive ion (cation)

Non- metals gain electrons and become negative ions (anion)

When a metal and non-metal react together and from a positive and negative ion then the ions become strongly attracted by electrostatic forces and form an ionic bond

Ionic Compounds

Ionic compounds have a regular lattice structure with strong electrostatic forces of attraction between oppositely charged ions

They have high melting and boiling points due to the strong attraction between the ions

When solid they don't conduct electricity because of they the ions in a fixed place but when a liquid it does as they are free to move

Most easily dissolve in water
