Elements 0.0 / 5 ? ChemistryAtomsGCSEAQA Created by: louisasommerbennettCreated on: 31-05-17 12:41 Elements consist of atoms with the same atomic num The number of protons in the nucleus decide what type of atom something is. e.g. an atom with one proton is hydrogen,an atom with two protons is helium Substances that contain atoms with the same number of protons is called an element. Approxiametly 100 different elements. All atoms of one element have the same number of protons. 1 of 3 Atoms are represented as symbols Atoms of each element- one or two letter symbol Shortened version. You can see each symbol on the periodic table e.g C= carbon, O=oxygen, Fe=Iron, Na=Sodium 2 of 3 Isotopes Different forms of same element Same number of protons, different number of neutrons Same atomic number, different mass number e.g. Carbon 12 or Carbon 13 Relative atomic mass is used instead of mass because many elements can exist as isotopes, this takes into account different masses and abundances. relative atomic mass= sum of (isotope abundance x isotope mass number)/sum of abundances of all isotopes 3 of 3
