Living Conditions in Early Modern Britain

Healthy Town Life: 

  • Wealthy ate new foods (eg: potatoes and peppers)
  • Wealthy payed for water piped to houses 
  • Poor still got water from conduit
  • Servants wash wealthy clothes
  • Rubbish still collected by rakers

Living Conditions in Early Modern Britain

Unhealthy Town Life 

  • Wealthy still ate mostly meat
  • New drinks (coffee) contained sugar = rotting teeth and obesity
  • Towns crowded so disease spread easier 
  • Badly built homes = damp and cold 
  • Smoke pollutes air = lung problems
  • Animals wandered streets = dirt, disease and waste  
  • Dirty water/ cellar as waste leaked into it.
