DSM

An American way of categorising mental illnesses that can be applied by any psychiatrist. 

DSM = The Diagnostic Statistics Manual 

Has 5 Axes.

Axis 1 - Clinical Disorders, e.g. alcohol abuse

Axis 2 - Personality Disorders, e.g. histrionic

Axis 3 - General Medical Conditions, e.g. cancer effects on mood

Axis 4 - Psychosocial and Environmental problems, e.g. stressful events like divorce

Axis 5 - Global Assessment of Functioning, e.g. How well is the patient working?

ICD

A way of categorising mental illness that can be applied by any psychiatrist. World Health Organization.

ICD = International Classification of Disorders. 

Each disorder is listed in 1 of 11 categories.
