Democracy

It comes from the Greek 'demos' and 'kratos' - meaning power to the people. The two core principles are:

• Political participation - key political decisions are made by the people, reflected in the idea of government by the people
• Political equality - each citizen has a free and equal opportunity to influence political decisions, reflected in the idea of equal citizenship
