The Effects of the Berlin Wall

Effect on the USSR:

  • Khruschev felt he had beaten the USA
  • The flow of refugees was stopped
  • Kennedy gave speeckes in Berlin and was met by cheering crowds

Effects on Germany:

  • Germans were reminded that their country was a tool for the superpowers
  • Kennedy was popular with Germans
  • Families were split - people couldn't see friends or relatives until the wall was taken down

Effects on Superpower Relations:

  • The Berliners cheered Kennedy when he gave speeches - possibly making Khruschev jealous
  • Kennedy empathised with Berliners
  • Kennedy turned it around by saying that he would never do such a thing - making Khruschev look evil and domineering
