  • eucharist: thanksgiving and is a sacrament (an outwards action that represenst inner change) where bread and wine are used to represent jesus sacrifice

  • jesus' last meal was with his disciples on the night before he died what he said and did gave the meal significant
  • when jesus said thanks and broke bread he said"this is my body, which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me" sfter supper in the same way with his cup and said " this cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this in remembrance of me "
  • some celebrate daily/weekly thinking the imporntants is so great that it is necessary. others celebrate monthly so it  dosen't loses it signicant

St Augustine

  • based on two things human free will and evil being absence of good
  • human free will - Adam and Eve, humans continuing to disobey God
  • Absence of good - like darkness is absence of light. Genesis 1:31 which says" God saw all that he had made and saw that it was very good"

St Irenaeus

  • Belived that humans sinned because they were morally immature. 
  • People have potential to be like him but need to develop
  • People cause suffering when they make bad decisions
  • God allowed natural evil to happen in order to make poeple better people eg earthquake brings distruction but gives people a reason to show kindness and generosity - good characteristics

Trinity

  • God is 3 and yet is 1
  • He is the father,son and holy spirit but he is still God.
  • Christians believe that Jesus was God the son in human form.  This is called the incarnation (literally in carne= in flesh)
  • John's Gospel describes it as, "The word (the son) became flesh and lived among us "
  • Father- Transcendent Creator
  • Son-Immanent and personal.  Christians pray to Jesus
  • Holy Spirit - Immanent and gift giver/miracle worker.

Nicene Creed

  • Creed - Statement that explains or states what people believe.
  • Nicene Creed - written to clarify Christian Belief.
  • It confirms the belief in the Trinity.
  • It says " I believe in one God" but then goes on to talk of Jesus and the HOly Spirit implying these are one.
  • “We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ...God from God, Light from light… of one being with the Father” Showing that Jesus (God the Son incarnate) and God (the Father) are one.

  • “We believe in the Holy Spirit… with the Father and Son he is worshipped.”  Since Christians are monotheist (they believe in one God) they can only worship one God.  If the Father, Son and Holy Spirit are worshipped they must be one.

Funerals

  • Christian funeral shows Christian belief that Jesus conquered death and was resurrected.
  • Chistians believe that they will meet their loved ones again in heaven.
  • Death is the start of an eternal life with God in Heaven.
  • Eulogy - short talk about the dead person  which celebrates their life.
  • The Reception -Body arrives at the church.  Priest reads passage from John's gospel: Jesus said I am the resurrection and the life.  He who believes in me will live, even though he dies.
  • Prayers are said for the deceased and for bereaved family and friends.
  • Catholic Christians pray for a quick time in purgatory.
  • The Committal: A burial ends with the coffin being “committed” to the earth with the words : “We commit his/her body to the ground: earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust, in the sure and certain hope of the resurrection to eternal life”.
  • At a crematorium, more prayers are said and the coffin is then taken away to be cremated. Later the ashes are returned to relatives to be buried or scattered.
