1. Water water everywhere

Analytical chemists: check the purity of the water.

Two types of analysis:

  • Qualitative
  • Quantitive 

    Qualitative: Tests the kind of chemical present
    Quantitative: Tests the amount of chemical present

2. Testing for ions

FLAME TESTS:

CALCIUM: BRICK RED

SODIUM: YELLOW

POTASSIUM: LILAC

COPPER: GREEN

4. Detecting acids

HOW TO TEST FOR ACID SOLUTIONS (to check for H+ ions)

LITMUS PAPER: Turns red

UNIVERSAL INDICATOR: Turns red

SPLINT : Goes pop

3.Looking for cations

Precipitation reaction: Add few drops of sodium hydroxide to the unknown solution.

Aluminium:  White precipitate  [With excess- would dissolve]

Calcium: White precipitate  [With excess-would not dissolve]

        [Since these two tests are similiar add excess of Sodium Hydroxide] 

Copper: Blue 

Iron (II):  Green

Iron (III):  Brown

Ammonium: None
