Restless Earth: Asian Tsunami

Restless Earth - Asian Tsunami (2004)                                                                                                     The earthquake occurred between the Australian and Eurasian plate in the Indian Ocean. The quake triggered a Tsunami.

Primary effects of the disaster

v  Worldwide donations of $7 billion from the international community.

v  250,000 people were killed.

v  Affected countries: Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, Thailand, the Maldives, and Somalia.

Secondary effects of the disasteR

v  Lots of aftershocks (e.g. on the Andaman Islands and Nicobar Islands).

v  Huge impact on the fishing industry – loss of income for fishermen.

v  Tourism was also hit – visitors felt at risk.

v  Environmental damage to ecological systems such as corals, forests and coastal wetlands.
