C2 Maths - Algebra and Functions

Set of cards going through some of Chapter One - Algebra and Functions - of the Edexcel Core Mathematics Course.

This set of cards contains worked examples from the Exam Board-reccomended textbook.

As ever, I hope this is useful for ya!

N.B: 2^2 means "2 to the power of 2" and so on -- I can figure out how to use superscript ;P

Simpifying algebraic fractions by division I

Examples:

a) 7x^4 - 2x^3 + 6x
x

Divide each term on the top by x

=
7x^4 - 2x^3 + 6x

Simplify the individual fractions as far as possible
So, we get:

7x^3 - 2x^2 + 6

Simpifying algebraic fractions by division II

b) 5x^2 - 6
2x

Same process as before - ya divide the top bit by 2x...

5x^2 - 6
2x 2x

Simplify the fractions...
Remember! x^1 = x and 5 x = 5x
2 2

So:

5x^2 - 6 = 5x - 3
2x 2 2

2 of 4

Simpifying algebraic fractions by division III

Think you know it?! Try these -- the answers are on the next card.

a) 4x^4 + 5x^2 - 7x
x

d) -x^4 + 4x^2 + 6
x

g) 9x^2 - 12x^3 - 3x
3x

l) -9x^9 - 6x^4 -2
-3x

3 of 4

Simpifying algebraic fractions by division IV

Answers! Post a comment saying how well you did!

a) 4x^3 + 5x - 7

d) -x^3 + 4x + 6
x

g) 3x- 4x^2 -1

l) 3x^8 + 2x^3 + 2x
3x
