C10.1 - pure substances and mixtures -

  • Pure substances - can be compounds or elements, but contain 1 SUBSTANCE
  • Impure - a mixture of two or more different elements or compounds.
  • Pure elements and compounds - melt and boil at specific points which can be used to identify them.
  • Mixtures - melt or boil over a range
  • elements and compounds - melt or boil at specific points.    > this makes them distinguishable.
  • Formulations - mixtures made up in definite proportions, which give a product its best properties to carry out its function.

C10.2 - Analysisng chromatograms...

  • Rf values can be measured against databases and become identified.

Rf = distance moved by substance

C10.3 - Testing for gases...

  • Hydrogen - burns rapidly with a POP when you apply a lighted splint.
  • Oxygen - relights a glowing splint.
  • Carbon dioxide - lime water goes cloudy
  • Chlorine gas - blue litimus paper goes white.
