 - Worked his way up in class, proud of achievements. Boasts about being mayor. Tries to impress (but fails) the Inspector with his local standing and his influential friends.

Selfish

- Wants to protect himself and family. He believes that socialist ideas and community is "nonsense and "a man has to make his own way."

- Wants to protect Birling and Co. He thinks that he did nothing wrong, with firing Eva/Daisy - looking after buisness.

- Protect reputation. When being interviewed, his selfishness gets the better of him: worried about the press viewing the story in act ii . Accuses shelia of disloyalty at start of act iii. Wants to hide Eric stole money: "I've  got to cover this up as soon as I can."
