Gray IP-address

WHAT IS "IP ADDRESS"?

Each computer on the network is assigned an IP address, this address uniquely identifies a computer on the network and allows it to communicate with the rest of the network. If you need to find your IP, use the service http://ip-locations.org! It will provide complete information about your geodata.

"GRAY" IP-ADDRESS

"Gray" IP-address - an IP-address belonging to the ranges of addresses reserved for use in local networks that are not used on the Internet. Recently, more and more such addresses are used by Internet providers, since with the growing needs of the world network, there is already a shortage of IP addresses. Although "gray" IP addresses are not Internet addresses, there is a way to organize an almost "transparent" connection of a local network with such addresses to the global network. This is done using special hardware and software tools that implement source address translation, known as the NAT (Network Address Translation) protocol.

The name "gray" addresses "of local networks is slang, as opposed to" white "addresses on the Internet, but recently it has become firmly established by Internet users. Despite the fact that most Internet services do not experience problems when translating addresses, there are a number of services that use either the low-level protocols of the IP stack or the UDP protocol (the latter can sometimes be forwarded using STUN). When using NAT, a user with a local network address sees the Internet, but the Internet does not see the user's computer (instead, he sees a gateway address with NAT). This creates certain problems, in particular when working in peer-to-peer networks, where it is important not only to initiate outgoing connections, but also to accept incoming ones. Typically, peer-to-peer clients can work around this limitation if one of the users is white by simply forcing the gray client to initiate the connection. If both users are "gray", the exchange of data between them is impossible for the above reason (the Internet does not see the "gray" IP user). On the other hand, inaccessibility from the outside can be useful in terms of security, since it is impossible to exploit vulnerabilities in ports that are not closed by a firewall.

This IP address is virtual, this IP address is serviced using NAT technology (when accessing resources outside of local addresses, that is, when requesting information from the Internet, your request will be broadcast through the public external IP address of the vpn server): users are given the opportunity to freely receive information from the Internet. This prevents the possibility of external access to the user's computers. Thus, the user's resources are not exposed to most virus attacks and various scans from the Internet, and the security of the Internet is increased. By cutting off parasitic traffic, the amount of incoming Internet traffic to the user is reduced.

REAL IP ADDRESS (ALSO KNOWN AS "EXTERNAL IP ADDRESS", "WHITE IP ADDRESS" OR "DIRECT IP ADDRESS")

When the "dedicated IP" service is activated, the computer is given a permanent Real IP-address through which it will interact with the Internet. The computer will be fully visible at this address from anywhere on the Internet, from any computer connected to the Internet.

The main advantages that a user receives with a fixed public (real) IP address:

  • The ability to run any server applications visible on the Internet, such as web server, game server, mail server, IRC server…. For example, you can place your website on this address, while it will be located on your computer, and not at the hoster's - this is a huge plus. This is comparable to the colocation service - placing your own equipment in the provider's data center. But it has an important plus - you yourself guarantee yourself that no one will be able to come and copy the contents of your server's hard disk.
  • Possibility of more secure access to online banking - when registering access to the bank, you specify your permanent IP, and this will serve as an additional security guarantee. Even if someone can steal your username and password, they will only be able to log into your account from your IP, and these are additional and considerable difficulties.
  • The ability to play multiplayer p2p online games that cannot work through NAT, for example, Age of Empires game based on DirectPlay7 protocol
