Waiting for Godot: Pozzo

?

Appearance

Role

  • Journeys along the road in both acts
  • Acts superior to Vladimir and Estragon- 'You are human beings none the less...of the the same species as Pozzo!'- acts like God
  • Believes himself to be a distinguished gentleman- 'Do I look like a man who can suffer'
  • Believes Lucky in honoured to be with him- sees himself as a benevolent master- 'the goodness of my heart!'
  • Abuses Lucky as his 'slave', physically and emotionally- 'up pig!', 'old dogs have more dignity', '(places the **** of the whip against Lucky's chest and pushes it)'
  • Vladimir and Estragon seem scared of him but still mock his act of superiority- 'I once knew a family called Gozzo. Mother had the clap.'
  • When Colin Duckworth asked Beckett whether Pozzo was Godot, the author replied: 'No. It is just implied in the text, but it's not true.'- but could be Godot returning everyday to see if Vladimir and Estragon deserve saving

Development (Growth & change)

Identity

  • Blind in Act 2- possibly as a symbol of retribution for his actions
  • Doesn't remember like Vladimir does- 'I don't remember having me anyone yesterday'
  • 'I used to have wonderful sight'- stripped of identity
  • Solely dependant on Lucky
  • In Act 2 rope between him and Lucky is shorter- suggesting decreased power of Pozzo and a mutual dependance now that they are both crippled
