Uthamn's Caliphate: Unrest and Revolt

Causes

  • UTHMAN'S TENDER-HEARTEDNESS, FORGIVENESS,LENIENCY WITH SUBJECTS AND OFFICIALS
  • JEWS-ABDULLAH BIN SABA('A.B.S')
  • PEOPLE FROM CONQUERED LANDS
  • CONFLICT BETWEEN HASHIMITES AND UMAYYADS

Effects

  • Governors and officials became careless with their duties- public angered
  • Jews had  been exiled by previous caliphs and kept well away from the holy cities of Makka and Medina. A.B.S was a clever Yemenite Jew who had accepted Islam only in self-interest. He forged innovative beliefs and instigated Muslims against the Caliph. Ordinary Muslims who had trivial complaints against officials also joined him.
  • Many non Arabs entered the fold of Islam. Some of these had done so in self interest and remained loyal to their previous beliefs. They were angered at the loss of their prestige and burning with revenge: they instigated Muslims against the Caliph.
  • Uthman himself was an Umayyad. Mischief mongererers provoked Hashimites by saying that Uthman was placig Umayyads in positions of power.

Overall summary

- Uthman was less of a powerful, authoritative figure than Umar had been- He did not do much to suppress revolts against himself.
