trade v aid

Advantages

  • trade- essential for an economy to grow and for living standards to rise
  • growth of the asian tigers meant that they have become developed 3 except taiwan have higher hdi than UK
  • means people can support themselves they dont have to rely on aid that can have strings attatched to it
  • easier now for MEDCs to transfer skills over especially since seacom cable means that more people can be in service sector
  • people can learn a skill if they are employed- however this is often only manual work
  • aid- can be supplied in 3 ways- bilateral, multilateral, non government all 3 are essential
  • essential in a disaster e.g. tsunami- short term
  • long term- many missionaries help bring communties out of poverty
  • top/bottom down aid
  • aid can help build roads for example grass roots

Disadvantages

  • trade
  • counties suffer from natural disasters, civil wars dictatorship they need aid to survive
  • TNCS have caused problems for example child labour, poor conditions for workers, low pay- just the rich benefit
  • aid
  • uganda eu spent £60 million building a 60 mile road that the country was not even able to upkeep
  • aid dependency- giving food people may be reliant on food to be supplied- caused controversy when nestle provided baby food
  • aid has strings attatched norway and denmark cut aid to uganda following anti gay laws
  • aid doesnt always reach desperate people due to corruption of government

Evaluation

both trade and aid are essential to lift a country out of poverty aid is essential as a country needs to deal with its core issues such as starvation and high birth mortality before it can function fully in the international economy, however due to corruption it is essential that there is a mixture of bottom up aid which has been successful especially in poor countries for example calcutta in india. Trade however is essential for a country once its life expectancy and death rate has been improved for example south africa where the country can compete on a global level. Tourism can also help to lift a country out of poverty this has been the case for Cape verde and the maldieves that have been upgraded by the UN after been ranked as least developed, however not all countries can facilitate tourism as it is the attractiveness of the landscape that attract people to areas such as these
