To Autumn vs. The Prelude

Similarities

  • Context: Williams Wordsworth and John Keats are both romantic poets and write about nature.
  • Theme: Both about nature - vegetation and animals in To Autumn  and power over man and how it is  beautiful in The Prelude.
  • Meaning: Both reflect on life.
  • Structure: Iambic pentameter is basic rhythm of both poems,

Differences

  • Context: Keats focuses on nature, personal emotion, deeper meaning and Wordsworth on how nature is more important than logic. To Autumn was written after walk in countryside, 6 months after writing experienced 1st signs of Tuberculosis (died in 1821 age 25) It was like the medically trained poet understood that his life will end and is preparing himself. The Prelude was written over his entire life (autobiographical) makes up 14 books altogether, was published after his death.
  • Theme: To Autumn is about ripeness (time for harvest and prep. for winter) and the excerpt from The Prelude is set in Wintertime. Time passing (seasons, days, hours and whole lives) in To Autumn.
  • Structure: Whole poem is an epic (long), it describes the whole of his life. Blank-verse (no stanzas),  in The Prelude vs. 3 stanzas, each changing the topic, season, time of day and key sense. Iambic pentameter is basic rhythm of poem. ABAB, variation 5.6.7.8, rhyming couplets 9 and 10. in To Autumn.
  • Language: Lots of imagery, so the reader can imagine what it was like at that time in his life. Sensuous. Personification - Autumn is a woman, shows her life (abundant crops- hard work, describes sleep- can also relax, thinks back to Spring- dying) in To Autumn,
  • Meaning: Enjoy life because it won't last forever in To Autumn (message to others). The Prelude reflects on how his experiences in life influenced his writing style. For example. having fun with friends in this excerpt. (About himself)

Overall comparison

They are very similar poems on the surface, as they are written by romantic writers and about nature, reflecting on life. However, when analysed more closely, they are actually very different as different language devices, structures and time settings are used. The poets are also very different ages and have different outlooks, though both are reflective, The Prelude is only about Wordsworth, whereas To Autumn can be applies to everybody. In conclusion, I prefer To Autumn because of its clear structure and meaning.

Thanks! This really helped me grasp the deeper meanings of both poems and the annotations (under the surface).
