Advantages
- It comes the closest to meeting the challenge of the falsification principle. (e.g if we found God’s body then it would falsify the statement that God is immortal)
- It reminds us that language is unstable when applied to God
- Non-cognitive and descriptive language is acceptable
- Undercuts principles of cognitive meaning
- Designed to lead to truth and the experience of God
|
Disadvantages
- Brian Davis criticised Maimonides by saying that only stating what something is not gives no indication of what it actually is
- How can it be useful to simply say what something is not
- Can language if this negative nature be valuable
- Christianity is based on revelations, this approach seems to oppose this idea
- Even if we state that God is not something isn't that asserting something about him?
