The Reformation In England

Causes

  • Henry VIII wanted a son.
  • Henry VIII was bankrupt.
  • Henry VIII wanted control over the church and the Pope.

Effects

  • Needed to divorce 1st wife Catherine of Aragon in order to marry Anne Boleyn to have a son
  • He needed more money therefore he decided to take all the money from the monasteries and followed Martin Luther. He persuaded people that the churches were bad. The church under Henry was more relaxed- the bible and services were in English.
  • Henry wanted more control over the church so the Dissolution of the monasteries helped him in 2 ways. Firstly: He got a lot more money. Secondly: He had more power over the church and of the Pope. Also, he made the church unpopular because the people realised they were being cheated. He wanted to overthrow the church in the first place because he was angry at the Pope for not granting him a divorce.

Overall summary

Overall, henry VIII stayed catholic yet had protestant influences and did things that were protestant-like because some catholic teachings he did not agree with. He agreed with some of Martin Luther's teachings but only the ones that benefited him.
