Successes & Failures of Industrialisation

Advantages

  • Heavy ind. was the biggest success: In 12 years, oil output had +than doubled and coal, iron, elec. and steel prod had multiplied.
  • Transport improved: Large expansion) the railway and canal networks ∴ goods transported +efficiently.
  • 5YPs created modern armaments ind: The factories and weapons they prod. were crucial in defeating Nazi Germany in WWII.
  • Stakhanovites benefited from ↑ wages and better conditions.
  • 5YPs ↑ size) of working class and made SU a +urbanised society.

Disadvantages

  • Quality of prods produced in factories was very poor: bc the plans set targets for quantity, not quality.
  • High levels of waste.
  • Most of targets set by Gosplan were unrealistically high: Factory managers were under +pressure so turned to bribery or theft to obtain supplies for their factories
  • Failure to reach prod targets = imprisonment: Gosplan officials were also under pressure & would falsely ↑ prod levels, as with officials in Moscow ∴ official Soviet statistics were unreliable.
  • Showpiece proj. under the 5YPs often relied on forced labour, fe: The White Sea Canal was built by 100,000 Gulag prisoners, around 12,000 died during construction.
  • Millions of peasants searching for work in towns and cities resulted in a housing shortage.
  • Constant shortages of  of consumer goods bc heavy ind and defence were prioritised.
  • Working conditions & safety standards ignored.

Evaluation

Despite what Stalin was telling the people, there was a less glamorous side to industrialisation. The 5YPs were often delivered at enormous cost to workers and the supposed successes were highly exaggerated. Overall, the Plans gave very little thought to improving the lives of ordinary workers.
