strengths and flaws of the Weimar republic

Advantages

  • Very democratic. Men and Women had vote at age 20 - at a time when in Britain it was 21 for men and 30 for women.
  • Chancellor had to have support from most of Reichstag people.
  • Strong president necessary to keep control over government and protect the country in a crisis.
  • Voting by proportional representation meant that number of seats each party had in Reichstag was based on number of votes they got.

Disadvantages

  • Challenge from army - leaders of the army wanted the Kaiser to return because their status would be maintained under him.
  • Challenge from civil service and judiciary - many judges and senior civil servants did not want Weimar because they did not agree with its liberal political views.
  • Article 48 - allowed president to rule by decree without president.
  • Proportional representation - produced a large number of parties and made it difficult to create political stability. No party was able to win a majority and there were many coalition governments.

Evaluation

Had both strengths and weaknesses.
