- At the start of the novella Scrooge is;

- He unsympathetic toward other people, refusing to give money to the charity men and supports work houses and prisons.
- He is also very selfish, he wont spend money on food or coal as he is so obsessed with money he sees it as a waste. this is because he fears poverty like Dickens did.

- Sociable " Wonderful party, wonderful games, wonderful unanimity"
- He is redeemed " I will not shut out the lessons that they teach"
- He isn't forced to change, its a choice he makes. this makes his redemption more powerful.

- Scrooges past has shaped him, the audience starts to understand why Scrooge is so cold and bitter.
- He could isolate himself from Fred as he is a sad reminder of his close relationship with his sister Fanny.
- He is transformed by learning the value of sympathy.
- Tiny Tim shows scrooge that the poor are people too, helps him feel empathy and care for people. makes him understand that helping people like Tim is his responsibility.
