Similarities

  • Both are types of photoreceptor
  • Both are types of secondary exteroceptors
  • Both contain visual pigments
  • Found in the retina

Differences

  • Visual pigments: rods - rhodopsin, cones - iodopsin
  • Rods have 1 type - monochromatic vision. Cones have 3 types - colour vision
  • Sensitivity: Rods -  good, cones - poor
  • Connection to bipolar cell: Rods - several to one, Cones - one to one
  • Rods transmit information in dimmer, low-light intensities than cones
  • Rods are more sensitive to movement than cones
  • Cones give a more accurate, clearer image than rods
