Advantages

it shows an early indication to how the problem will be solved
the clients can review the product and add more to the specification before the full coding stage has begun
helps the client understand the development process

Disadvantages

too much time might be spent creating the prototype rather than the real code
the developers might be lazy and simply adapt the prototype to become the real code

Evaluation

I think prototyping is useful because it helps both the client and the server to improve the code
