EvaluationMost of the aims of Prohibition e.g crimerate and social problems were undermined by its enforcement. Due to it being an infringement of basic rights many ordinary people disobeyed the law and became supporters of bootlegging. This support lead to organised crime increasing massively and being glamourised (therefore appealing). In contrast to Prohibitonsa unorganised and under-financed ability, organised crime was sophsticated and had heavy financial power (for example Al Capone). This under-finance often led to a large corruption within the police force who were easily bribed by by criminals. The government was allegedley also corrupt, with many membes being involved in illegal purchases. It was easy for the rich to gain alcohol as they had the money to do so. This widened the gap between the social class as the poor could not do this and were forced to brew their own alcohol which was highly dangerous. Although Prohibiton would lead to better production as the workers were not influenced by alcohol therefore could concentrate better and were in better health to do more work ultimately leading to a quicker and better quality production. However, alcohol was one of Americas biggest industries and the lack of this led to a massive drop in tax revenues for America and therefore unemployment rose as big industries were being destroyed. |
