Old Age Pension Act

Advantages

  • By 1914, nearly a million people were receiving it
  • People over 70 with annual income of £21-£31 would get 1-5s pension per week
  • Married Couple; 7s6p
  • State pensions made them independent for the rest of  their lives
  • It's free as before people couldn't afford private pensions.
  • Government funded

Disadvantages

  • Amount rewarded (5s in 1909 which was the maximum) was below Rowntree's poverty line
  • Affected a very small proportion of people and could be withheld in 'undeserving' cases
  • Many exemptions; People had to be British and have lived in UK for 20 years, people had to have not avoided work. people had to have not been imprisoned in last 10 years etc
  • Many pensioners had no birth certificates and could not prove age
  • Some still sent to workhouses

Evaluation

Overall, the Old Age Pension had an adequate impact on the elderly's lives as the Act still did not improve how much elderly people would make as it was still below the poverty line through the research of Rowntree.  There were too many exemptions and many people who desperately needed it could not get it due to exemptions and not having birth certificates possibly because of where they lived and their parents etc. It was a small measure but a big step as it showed how the government was willing to improve society and help people and it made an enormous impact on elderly people's lives as they no longer felt like burdens on their children or not being sent to workhouses
