Friendship quotes

  • Often described as an animal:
  • "Strong as a bull" - physical attributes which juxtapose his personality. (Chapter 2)
  • "Lennie covered his face with his huge paws and bleated with terror"- higlights how he's heavy handed and has lack of intelligence, weak, vulnerable. (Chapter 3)
  • "Slowly, like a terrier who doesn't want to bring back a bull to its master, Lennie approached, drew back and approached again" - fearful of punishment, his position is low described as a dog, wants to stay away from trouble.(Chapter 1)
  • Unusual friendship with George like father and son
  • "George, you want i should go away and leave you alone?"- mention of his name is of childish behavior (Chapter 1)
  • "If you don' want me i can go off in the hills an' find a cave. I can go any time."- Lennie knew that George will feel guilty after leaving him and uses this to get his own way.(Chapter 1 )
  • "But not us! An' why? Because....because i got you to look after me, and you got me to look after you, and that's why"- he tressures his relationship with George.(Chapter 1)
  • "You never give a thought to George", she went on in Lennie's voice. "He been doin' nice things alla time." - guilty consciounse, knows that he's George down and is a burden to George. (Chapter 6)

Death

Destiny

  • Consistently causes deaths- mouse, puppy and Curleys wife
  • Lennie's violence gets worse throughout the book proleptic irony for Curley's wifes death.
  • Mouse death -"I'd pet ' em, and pretty soon they bit my fingers and i pinched their heads a little and then they was dead"- Lennie dosen't know when to stop an innocent thing led to anger = death (Chapter 1)
  • Puppy's death- " Why do you got to get killed? You ain't so little as mice. I didn't bounce you hard" -He attemtpts to show affection which instead ended in a tragedy. (Chapter 5)
  • Curley's wife death- " Oh! Thats nice,' and he stroked it harder. "Oh that's nice."
  • A lot of the events foreshadows Lennie's death
  • Death of the mice and puppy foreshadows Curleys wife death leading to Lennie's death
  • Chapter 1 - "Lennie- if you jus' happen to get in trouble like you always done before, i want you to come right here an' hide in the brush"
  • Chapter 6 " A silent head and beak lanced down and plucked it out by the head and the beak swallowed the little snake whilst its tail waved frantically."
  • George is in control of Lennie's destiny at the end
